In February 2022, several news sites reported that Dead Island 2 was still in development and was apparently going very well, with much progress being made. The build featured a part of the map of California, including a few NPCs with voice action, as well as a 'dev room' containing all the finished weapons and zombies that were to be featured in the game.

In 2020, a basic but playable version of the game was leaked from 2015, when it was still being developed by Yager. In August that year, it was announced by THQ Nordic that Sumo Digital had been removed from the game's development and an internal studio of Deep Silver was put on, Dambuster Studios. However, in 2019 it was confirmed that the game is still in development. The game is expected to be delayed far past its previously scheduled ' late 2016' release and has since been completely removed from the Steam store. Game studio Sumo Digital announced they had taken over development on March 9th, 2016, but did not mention a release date.

Development was suspended from in July 2015 when Yager was dropped from the project due to apparent creative differences. It was first revealed on June 9th, 2014 at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014. It is the second main entry in the Dead Island series. Dead Island 2 is an upcoming action role-playing survival horror video game in development by Dambuster Studios and will be published by Deep Silver.
